Chapter one is a warm-up exercise about which colors to use in painting light and shadow and when to use them. The next is a demonstration in a dark room using a single light source and various colored cloths to show the effects of "reflected-light "and how it describes form. The following chapters cover darks and mid-values, cool shadows and reflected light, cast shadows and details. Steve paints his watercolor, "Chios Boats" revealing all the secrets as they present themselves in the painting.
