In What Do You Mean Watercolors Are Hard, Nancy Couick tells us that watercolor painting can be learned by anyone who is willing to take the time to practice.
In the introductory chapter on material selection Couick explains that "It is difficult to paint anything if you don't have the right materials. Most teachers assume that you already know how to hold the brush, pick your paint and fill your palette…" In her subsequent dialogue and through the two demo chapters, Nancy talks more about the tools you will need to begin the painting journey and does an excellent job of breaking down the process of watercolor painting into all of its many steps and phases.
Couick paints mainly from digital photographs that she has taken in nature and from them creates a value study, which then helps her determine the shades and intensity of colors to choose from her palette.
Award-winning watercolor artist and gallery owner Nancy Couick, began her career as a business major until she took her first watercolor class. After that first class she was "hooked" and now has her own gallery where she teaches five classes a week as well as teaching the occasional traveling workshop. She resides outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.
