In Painting Water with Pastels, North Carolina artist Carmella Jarvi has made it easy for the beginning or intermediate artist to continue their journey in the interesting and multi-layered world of pastel painting. From surface and color selection to finished work, this art video is filled with lots of useful pastel tips for all artists.
"Regardless of your pastel experience or in painting water, you should be able to find some good strategies and/or techniques to help your pastel painting," Jarvi says at the start of the DVD's six teaching/demo segments. Working from photographs as starting points, Jarvi picks her colors by holding the reference picture against her assorted pastels, thereby assuring that she is using the right combinations even before pastel touches paper. Along with color choice, Jarvi also includes warm-up exercises with crayon on newsprint to "…practice what the final image will look like on its surface."
The DVD's six segments include Soft Pastels and Pastel Surfaces, Composition and Color, Mounting Surfaces, Water in Landscape (2) and Women in Water Demo. Also included are segments about Carmella and her influences and pictures from her own gallery.
